How Does Hair Transplant Surgery Work?

How Hair Transplant Works

Is there anything that terrifies men more than losing their hair?

In today’s digital world where social media is everything, baldness could make a person lose his confidence and ability to initiate social interaction. People for ages have tried various futile methods to rejuvenate hair growth until the hair transplant procedure was invented.

Hair transplant surgery is a minimally invasive procedure through which hair grafts are taken from the densest part of the head and planted in the bald area in a pattern similar to the original hair structure. There are two common types of hair transplant surgery available on the market: “FUT” and “FUE”.

If you think Hair Transplant is an ideal way to recover your lost tresses, you’ll read more on how the surgery works as we will be discussing the step by step procedure of hair transplant surgery that would help you get an idea of the process as well as the timelines for surgery.

What Are The Steps Of Hair Transplant Procedure?

Before the finalization of hair transplant surgery and procedure, preoperative assessment is done in which the surgeon analyses the patient’s scalp, the expectations of the patient and the number of sessions required for completion of the procedure. A preoperative hair analysis is done to analyze the current denseness of the hair and pattern so that the same can be replicated through the surgical procedure. It is also advised that the patient should refrain from consuming any medicines, smoking, and alcohol which can affect the survival rate of the graft.

1. Assessment

Evaluating a person with androgenetic alopecia for a hair transplant generally consists of our physician determining which classification a person fits into, designing a hair line, examining the donor area, and then deciding upon the appropriate number of grafts.

2. Identification Of Methods

The donor zone is identified and prepared for harvesting. There are two basic methods of harvesting your donor hair – Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

3. Follicular Unit Transplantation ( FUT)

In Follicular unit transplantation, the surgeon uses a scalpel to remove a strip of skin bearing the hair tissue from the posterior scalp where the hair is densest. The individual follicular unit grafts are separated which are typically made up of one follicle to a group of four. Once the grafts are acquired, the surgeon then uses micro blades to puncture the sites where ideally there were hair follicles in the past to plant these extracted grafts.

4. Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE)

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) takes a different approach for the extraction of the grafts from the donor area. Instead of removing an entire strip of skin which creates a long scar in the donor area, tiny punches are done in the donor area through which individual follicular units are extracted. FUE can be done in one long session or it could be broken up into multiple small sessions.

5. Minimizing Scar Formation

By limiting the width of the strip to be taken and avoiding strain on the wound, our surgeon minimizes the donor scar altogether. To avoid multiple scars many physicians who use strip harvesting employ a single scar technique, even if multiple procedures are performed. By utilizing careful dissection along the incision line, damage to hair follicles can be diminished.

In Summary

So, to conclude the hair transplant procedure is minimally invasive with primarily two types of surgical procedures and the recovery period could be anywhere between seven to fifteen days depending on the type of procedure undertaken by the patient. The hair later grown looks natural and blends with the existing ones.
