How Does Liposuction Work?

How Does Liposuction Work

If you’re struggling to reduce fat in certain parts of your body through diet and exercise, you may be inclined to try liposuction. Using liposuction, you can safely and directly remove fat from specific areas around the body. Laser-assisted liposuction under tumescent anaesthesia is the preferred method these days, because it is safer, less painful, and more effective than traditional liposuction, and the procedure and recovery time are quicker. Plus, you’ll be able to schedule it as an outpatient procedure! Before you arrange for a consultation, let’s learn how liposuction works.

First, it is important to know the different types of Liposuction techniques.

Types of Liposuction Techniques:

1. SafeLIPO

This technique uses a local anaesthetic solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine to numb the treatment area. The fat is then sucked out through a canula.

2. Laser SafeLIPO

This technique uses laser to tighten the skin in the treated area from where fat has been removed.

3. Cool Sculpt:

Cryo gel probes are used to Freeze the fat cells which are then eliminated by the lymphatic system.

Liposuction Procedure

Although each procedure varies, generally, liposuction surgeries follow this process:

Location options may include:

  • All the above mentioned procedures are carried out in a fully equipped OT, however it is a daytime procedure. You walk in at 10am and walk out at 5pm

Anaesthesia:

  • Tumescent anaesthesia is used, which is safe and free from all the risks of general anaesthesia.

The Procedure for Minimally Invasive SafeLIPO: How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction or fat removal surgery is performed either under tumescent anaesthesia and is treated as a day case, meaning you will not have to stay in hospital overnight. The procedure usually takes between three to four hours to complete depending on the area being treated and how much fat is being removed.

Your surgeon at SkinCity will make a small incision in the area being treated before inserting a thin plastic tube called a cannula. The other end of this cannula is attached to a powerful vacuum device which removes the fat quickly and efficiently. Once the fat has been liquified, a different cannula is inserted through the same small opening and into the layers of fat beneath the skin. The cannula is connected to a suction device, which vacuums the liquified fat out of the body.

You will need to book in a consultation where we will assess your BMI (body mass index) to ensure the procedure is suitable for you. If you are very overweight it is likely that you will not be suitable for liposuction as there are physical limits to the amount of fat that can safely be removed from the body. Liposuction is a procedure best suited for body sculpting rather than weight loss.
