2020 started most unexpectedly as one of the diseases from coronavirus family started spreading out of china to almost 60 countries with 1,95000 people getting the disease with the count increasing everyday and around 8000 people deceased till now. The disease is name as COVID-19 which is a short form of Co- Corona VI- Virus D- Disease 19- 2019.

The COVID-19 comes from the same coronavirus family which earlier had SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome ) that broke out in 2003 and MERS( Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The fatality rate of COVID-19 is relatively lower than SARS but is far more contagious and hence spreads very rapidly. In this blog, we will understand the steps we need to take to stay safe from the virus and who are at the highest risk.

How To Protect Yourself From Coronavirus

As coronavirus is declared a pandemic by world health organization (WHO), It is very important to follow all the guidelines and precautions in order to stay safe from the coronavirus. Below mentioned is the list of precautions that you must make sure that you follow with utmost discipline and advise your loved ones to do the same.

1. Stay Home

Corona is a contagious disease and the best way to avoid any chances of getting it by staying at home. Do not go out until and unless it is an emergency.

2. Social Distancing

Corona spreads from one person to another through touch or coming in touch with fluids from the patients that typically has a range of 6 feet. Hence in case, you need to go out of home, make sure you keep a distance of 6 feet from other people in order to avoid any contact.

3. Wash Your Hands

Even if you maintain distance, the virus could come on your hands when you touch anything in a public place that is accessible to other people. Hence when you come home wash you hands for atleast 20 secs

4. Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose or Mouth

Coronavirus gets inside the system from hand when you touch eyes nose or mouth with it. Hence avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth and if you want to then wash your hands or disinfect it before touching.

5. Avoid Contact with Sick People

The fastest way to get a contagious disease is when you contact sick or affected people. Same is the case with corona, hence avoid any contact with sick people unless you are a nurse or a medical professional

6. Cover Mouth and Nose

Whenever you sneeze or cough cover your mouth and nose by handkerchief or with your elbow.

7. Clean and Disinfect

Places that are frequently touched by a lot of people should be cleaned and disinfected regularly. These places could be doors, windows, doorknobs, tables, etc.

8. Use Facemask if You are Sick

In case you have any symptoms of the corona, the best way to avoid spreading it is by covering your mouth and nose with a face mask.

Who Is At A Higher Risk?

Although coronavirus can infect anyone research has shown that certain sections of people are at higher risk than other people. This includes older adults who are more than 50 years of age and among those who have serious chronic medical conditions such as lung disease, heart disease, and diabetes.

If you fall under such categories then you are at higher risk of catching coronavirus. Hence it is important that you take extra care in order to avoid getting sick. The first and foremost thing you need to do is stay at home as much as possible. Do not go to any public places unless it is for medical reasons. Keep a safe distance from people and wash your hands whenever you touch any objects of places that are accessed by others.
