What Is Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)?
Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
Are you sweating too much?
Profusely enough to the point of embarrassment?
Your body (Sympathetic Nervous System) naturally secretes sweat to cool down the body. But, in some cases, up to 1% of the population has excessive sweating where the body (Sympathetic Nervous System) overworks to cool down the internal body temperature.
If that’s you, then you’re suffering from an Excessive Sweating condition called ‘Hyperhidrosis’.
Understanding, hyperhidrosis will help you uncover the causes, symptoms, and treatment of this condition.
Hyperhidrosis and Its Types
Hyperhidrosis comes in three forms—and one form can cause very, very sweaty palms.
- Axillary Hyperhidrosis , excessive sweating in the armpits, can cause embarrassing wet marks on shirts.
- Plantar Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating of the feet. It is a known cause of foot odour and athlete’s feet.
- Facial Hyperhidrosis, sweating of the face, which can cause the person to be insecure, appearing overly-anxious, when this is not really the case.
Regardless of where it occurs, hyperhidrosis affects a person’s quality of life.
Unfortunately, hyperhidrosis can cause a significant amount of stress, which can start up a vicious cycle: You get anxious > sweat a lot > get more anxious because of the sweat. Sweating, particularly with primary hyperhidrosis, can also be provoked by your central nervous system’s flight response—irrespective of you feeling anxious or not.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
It is unclear what causes hyperhidrosis. Your body has several million sweat glands scattered over it, the bulk of which are eccrine glands that secrete odorless, clear fluid that helps control body temperature through evaporative heat loss. Generally, hyperhidrosis involves overactive eccrine glands. The apocrine glands are the other type of sweat glands, which are found in the armpits and genital area. Apocrine glands produce a thick fluid that produces body odour when it comes in contact with bacteria on the skin’s surface. Nerves then activate both the eccrine and apocrine glands. These nerves become active due to a variety of stimuli agents, including:
- Physical activity or exercise
In patients with hyperhidrosis, sweat glands (eccrine glands in particular) overreact to stimuli, producing more sweat than is needed.
What are the Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis?
Having palmer hyperhidrosis, axillary hyperhidrosis, plantar hyperhidrosis, and/or facial hyperhidrosis is a profound and dramatic experience. It affects all aspects of life, including professional activities, the activities of daily living and normal, interpersonal social actions. In severe palmer hyperhidrosis cases, sweat is seen to drip literally down from the hands. This is a condition which can be detected in early childhood. Usually, the sweating of the hands is the most distressing appearance of primary hyperhidrosis. The amount of sweating varies from moisture to actual dripping. Many patients report, also, that their hands feel cold and clammy.
Is there any treatment for hyperhidrosis?
There are various treatments to tackle sweaty palms and other symptoms of hyperhidrosis. To determine which kind of hyperhidrosis you have, at Skin City we may ask about your medical history and run labs or other tests to measure your sweat excretion. Next step: figuring out a treatment plan. Like most medical conditions, hyperhidrosis is different for everyone; still, there are some new-age treatments that we encourage. Our two cutting-edge treatments, Laser Therapy for Underarm Sweating will precisely target, heat, and destroy the sweat glands, which are primarily found in a specific layer of tissue under the skin of the underarms. This procedure usually takes less than an hour to complete. Our second treatment, called Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) provides a complete cure from underarm and armpits sweating with the current the results are approaching 100% success.
