What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is the process of putting tiny permanent impressions into the scalp using specialized pigments and needles. In a procedure done properly, each of these impressions will look like a hair follicle. Using this process we create the illusion of full follicular density–even in areas of hair loss.  This allows us to effectively camouflage hair loss. Choosing a properly trained technician that has skill and experience is most important. At SkinCity, we can offer you just that.

How Does it Work?

Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is a relatively painless yet permanent solution which works by adding pigmentation to the scalp to imitate a naturally shaved head. The process itself requires a highly skilled technician and cannot be correctly carried out by tattooists or cosmetic pigmentation specialists, as the equipment and technique used are different to cosmetic tattoos. Essentially SMP requires the technician to replicate the look of thousands of hair follicles as they would on a freshly shaved head. When done correctly, SMP looks extremely natural and realistic – even from up close.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation Permanent? How Long Does It Last for?

Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics or permanent makeup. Often referred to as a cosmetic hair or scalp tattoo, this treatment typically lasts 4-6 years. After that time, a client may experience some slight fading, to which they can come back in for a quick touch up. This cosmetic solution will not wash off but can be tweaked as years go on. We always recommend meeting with our team of experienced expert practitioners to discuss your treatment options.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation Work?

The answer is yes… but there is a little more to it than that.

Scalp pigmentation does last, but it also can fade over time. However, with careful management and good aftercare (including protecting your scalp from the sun, and using a daily moisturiser), the fading effects should be minimal, allowing for a natural, confidence boosting hairline to stay in place. Long term fading is what happens two or more years after the procedure has taken place. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is difficult to predict exactly what will happen – there are so many factors to consider (including the original clinic, the after care, and even where the patient lives), and scalp pigmentation is a very new way of providing those with thinning or lost hair with something. However, results so far show that a scalp that has been treated in this way could potentially last for a lifetime, although the occasional (every 3-5 years) ‘top up’ would ensure this.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation A Tattoo?

Scalp micropigmentation, also known as hair tattoo, is a new development for men suffering from hair loss. Instead of battling male pattern baldness with medication or an expensive hair transplant, guys are starting to turn to a more practical solution – tattooed hair! Like a traditional tattoo, SMP basically tattoos a number of tiny dots on your head, between your hair follicles.

Because the natural pigment is applied at the epidermal level of the scalp, the hair tattoo resembles the natural look of real hair on a shaved head. The final result can fix a receding hairline, fill in areas of thinning hair, provide a thicker hairstyle, and cover scarring or skin diseases.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation Fade?

There are different types of fading when it comes to scalp pigmentation, and although some of it is certainly expected, some should be checked by our professional. Mid treatment fading, for example, is perfectly normal, and occurs, as the name suggests, between treatments. Scalp pigmentation is not a one off treatment, and will require up to four visits to your chosen clinic. After each treatment, the client is sent home to rest, and the next treatment will take place around a week or so later. In this week, the initial pigmentation will generally fade as it settles into the scalp. This is not only expected, it is welcomed! It gives your practitioner a gauge on just how your scalp pigmentation will work, which in turn allows them to work out the next course of treatment, which will depend on the individual concerned.

What is the Suitable Scalp Pigmentation Treatment?

Micro pigmentation is an ingenious technique which is used to implant small amounts of pigment into the upper layer of the scalp in a dot or line pattern this creates an optical illusion of a full scalp even without hair restoration. This is a painless walk in- walk out procedure which takes a few hours and is performed without any anaesthesia. Skin City is one of the very few centres to launch scalp pigmentation treatment. In patients with significant hair loss being treated with Mesotherapy/ PRP or even hair transplantation, scalp micro pigmentation can be added at the completion of these procedures to give maximum scalp coverage look.

Does Scalp Pigmentation Have Any Side Effects?

Scalp Pigmentation Side Effects

The vast majority of procedures performed on the body come with some level of risk. However, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) does not have any serious side effects reported. As SMP is the process of restoring the look of hair to its natural density by applying ink to the scalp by professionals to create a natural look for patients, there are no known side effects of the procedure. The following are potential issues of which you should be aware.

1. Allergies:

Some people are allergic to ink when it is applied to their skin. It is possible to react to the colorants used during the procedure.

2. Needle Safety:

As is the case with any treatment that uses needles, the person performing your treatment should be using a clean, new needle for every patient.

3. Colour Difference:

There are worse outcomes by untrained service providers or even those that use materials and equipment of poor quality. Some treatment result in the bluish hue that can be greenish other times depending on the ink used.

4. Required Great Skill Artist:

This treatment requires great skill artist. If you are not getting a good artist then it could lead to bad reaction on your scalp. A good artist knows how to use needle, and other things that is required for this treatment.

5. Not Create Significant Length Appearance:

Once you are done with this therapy you would not be able to create good length of your hair because if you do so it can cause you side effect.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation Hurt?

Most men and women will experience some mild discomfort during micropigmentation, although anesthetics are available to numb the scalp. Furthermore, some areas of the scalp may be more sensitive, but the slight pain will become more tolerable as the treatment progresses.

While most patients don’t find SMP to be overly painful, there is some level of pain and discomfort felt during the procedure. However, everybody has different pain thresholds. What one patient may find painful, another may find slightly uncomfortable. So, your experience will depend very much upon your own pain levels. So, while it may be unpleasant, you shouldn’t experience a high level of pain. As with general tattooing, there are areas of the scalp that are a little more painful than others to treat. These typically include the temples and the skin just above the ears.

Scalp Micropigmentation – Before and After Results

Skin City is proud to feature a wide range of our Scalp Micro pigmentation client results. When researching this process, a photograph showing real people before and after scalp micropigmentation is an essential component of the decision-making process. Although factors such as location, cost, experience, and service are all important, the single most significant variable is the quality of work produced by Skin City. Before and after photos are often the best resources available to make that judgment, with the exception of meeting real clients face to face of course.

Scalp Micropigmentation Recovery

Completing a treatment takes a minimum of two sessions though a touch-up procedure might only require one. The wounds would take about a full week to heal, which is the minimum period required before beginning another session. Pigments during this time begin to settle into the skin and exhibit fading. It helps the specialist plan his next move depending on the outcome of this prior treatment.

  • Protecting the scalp area from accidents with a simple covering is suggested though it should be removed occasionally to allow the scabs a better opportunity to dry out.
  • By the middle of the recovery week, the redness that was evident on the first day will have noticeably decreased. The scabs would also be more obvious, appearing bigger than regular hair follicles.
  • The final day should reveal a more even skin tone. By this time, a majority of the pigments would have faded and its appearance of a lighter shade. This is due to the body trying to discharge a foreign entity from its system.

This mostly makes up the recovery process of any treatment. It may vary among patients though this is approximately how most scalps will heal, barring any untoward incidents. There would be more fading and settling of the pigments within the next two to three weeks as it tries to fully integrate itself into the skin. The appearance of your treatment will likely be the same as how it looked like a month after it was implemented with proper care and maintenance.
